Charges filed against 16-year-old in crash that took lives of 4 friends
A 16-year-old girl in Marin County is facing a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge after a tragic car accident in Woodacre resulted in the deaths of four of her friends. The charge does not include an accusation of gross negligence and carries a maximum sentence of one year in detention. The girl, accompanied by her parents, appeared in court and is expected to respond to the charges in early December. The incident occurred when the teenager lost control of the vehicle while driving up to 25 miles over the speed limit. The girls who lost their lives were close friends and students at Archie Williams High School. One survivor of the crash, Marley Barclay, also attended the court proceedings. Contrary to initial speculation, a report from the California Highway Patrol found no evidence that the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming car but rather lost control due to the excessive speed.
