Charges brought against suspect in deadly Oakland County pedestrian collision post deportation
A suspect accused of causing the death of a prominent pastor in Rochester Hills last year is facing charges, but it seems unlikely that he will face a trial as he was deported before being officially charged. The suspect, Jhadiel Portilla, aged 28, was charged recently for a moving violation leading to death and possession of a counterfeit license plate related to the November 3, 2024, collision that resulted in the death of Stephen Singleton, aged 72. Singleton had been fatally struck by a 2013 Ford Focus while crossing Rochester Road at Avon after going for a morning walk. Despite wearing a reflective vest and using a crosswalk, he was hit by the vehicle. Following the incident, Singleton's family expressed frustration over the release of the suspect, Portilla, who is an undocumented immigrant, pending a federal court hearing. In an announcement on Wednesday from the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, it was revealed that Portilla had been deported back to Columbia on February 18. Consequently, it is unlikely that he will face prosecution for the tragic accident.
