CCSD special education teacher identified in deadly Boulder Highway crash
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- On his last day of school, a Clark County School District special education teacher was killed by an alleged reckless driver. The education community and family remembered him as a passionate teacher of 22 years and a friend to many. Jeff Buchbaum, 55, was killed in a crash Friday near Boulder Highway and Desert Horizons Drive, just south of Russell Road. Police said 28-year-old Zachary Zwick drove at a “high rate of speed” and collided into the car Buchbaum was driving. His wife, Jennifer Boske, was also injured in the crash as a passenger in the car, she spoke with 8 News Now. Zwick was charged with two felony counts of reckless driving and was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond, according to court records. The Clark County Education Association, a teacher union, posted more information about Buchbaum’s career in the school district. “We are saddened to announce the loss of one of our own, Jeff Buchbaum,” a teacher union spokesperson wrote. “If you were lucky enough to know Jeff, you know that he was a passionate teacher, a proud union member, a good friend, an extremely loving father and husband.” Buchbaum taught special education students from several schools across CCSD in his 22-year career: Mojave High School, Monaco Middle School, Chaparral High School, Mack Middle School, Valley High School and Cunningham Elementary. “With a smile, Jeff always made time to ask how you are doing, volunteer in any way or simply for a friendly conversation,” a teacher union spokesperson wrote. “His legacy will live on through his beautiful children.” The CCEA urged others to reflect on their hard work through the summer break and not to forget people like Buchbaum, who “made school worth coming to.” “Take time to do something selfless or say a kind word to someone who needs it in Jeff’s honor,” a teacher union spokesperson wrote. “He will be missed dearly. Our hearts are with Jeff's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.” Jennifer Buchbaum, Jeff’s first wife, responded to 8 News Now regarding his passing and the legacy he leaves behind. “He was a beloved special education teacher,” she wrote in a statement to 8 News Now. The family told 8 News Now they are currently working with legal counsel on a response during this difficult time. There is currently no donation site set up for Buchbaum’s family. This article will be updated with a link when one is verified by the family to 8 News Now.
