Car crashes through fence in Arvada neighborhood before fleeing the scene
ARVADA, Colo. (KDVR) -- Police are still looking for the suspect in a hit-and-run crash in Arvada earlier this month that was caught on camera. The crash happened at Carr Street and 51st Avenue in Arvada on Feb. 12. A video of the incident shows a purple BMW losing control, driving at high speeds in a neighborhood before crashing through a fence. No one was hit, but the driver fled the scene. Two weeks later, you can see the new part of the fence along a walking trail that had to be installed after a car came crashing through, and tire treads are still in the grass, as well. Chase Amos with the Arvada Police Department says the interurban trail the car ended up on is usually a busy place around 3 p.m. However, when the crash happened, it was miraculously empty. “It is frequented by walkers, joggers, bike riders and I’m just thankful that nobody was there at the time," Amos said. FOX31's Nate Belt talked with a few residents on the street who said speeding on this stretch of 51st Avenue is an issue they’ve had for years, saying they believed it was only a matter of time before an incident like this happened. Police say even though no one was on the trail, other people nearly got hit. “He was flying by construction workers, getting really close to them at a much higher speed than the posted speed limit," Amos said. Neighbors say they’ve seen the distinctive-looking car in the area before, as well. Police say the car was captured on a license plate reading camera in town both before and after the crash, but it had a stolen license plate, making it impossible to easily contact the owner. “Of course, we think that way, and we would try to do that if it were possible in this case, but like I said, it’s a misused plate; it doesn’t belong to that vehicle," Amos said. While the driver remains at large, the department believes they’ll have them in custody soon. “This would be a lot smoother if that person just wants to turn themselves in because we are confident that we’re going to identify them," Amos said. If you have any information about the car or its driver, you’re asked to contact the Arvada Police Department at (720) 898-6900 and can reference case AR26003479.
