Car crashes into Ridgeland area school building, summer camp temporarily canceled

A car crashed into the front of a Ridgeland area school building this week, causing significant damage and forcing the cancellation of part of the school’s summer camp schedule.Leaders with The Village School said the vehicle slammed into the front of the building, leaving a large hole and damaging the entrance area.School officials said no students were inside the building at the time of the crash and the driver was not injured.A repairman who was at the property during the incident reportedly witnessed the crash. School leaders said the incident appears to have been an accident.The school announced summer camp scheduled for next week has been canceled while cleanup and repairs begin. Officials said camp activities are expected to resume later this summer.The Village School said it does have insurance coverage, along with the building’s landlord, but leaders say repairs and payments will take time. The school is now asking the community for help funding additional safety measures, including security planters or barriers to better protect children and the building in the future.School leaders also launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with rebuilding efforts and added safety upgrades.
