Car accident in Aurora sparks shooting amid neighbors' suspicions of kidnapping.

In Aurora on Monday, a car accident escalated into a dramatic incident involving gunfire, leading neighbors to intervene when they suspected a kidnapping was happening. Following the chaotic sequence of events, an Aurora resident, who wished to remain unidentified for safety reasons, described the sudden disruption to their day: "I was asleep and I woke up to a loud bang." Recounting the surprising turn of events near 7th Street and East Joliet Avenue, the resident shared, “I just looked out the window and saw the bottom of a car." The Aurora Police Department reported that a Subaru carrying a woman and children collided with another car, resulting in the Subaru flipping over. A BMW then arrived, with a man and woman helping the children from the overturned vehicle into their own. Misunderstanding the situation, neighbors feared a kidnapping and got involved. Despite attempts to diffuse the situation peacefully, it escalated when a woman fired a shot, prompting shock and concern among witnesses. Misty Townsend, 47, was arrested by the police and charged with wrongdoing. Authorities stressed the importance of clear communication during such incidents. While the children involved were unharmed, the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment. Investigations suggest speed and potentially alcohol played a role in the crash.
