Campaign for farm road safety after deadly tractor accident

In late May, a tragic accident involving a sugarcane tractor led to the loss of Michelle Seaton's life in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, prompting a renewed focus on road safety months before the sugarcane season began. Ron Czajkowski, the Safety Coordinator with Acadiana Region Destination Zero Deaths, emphasized the importance of being cautious when sharing the road with agricultural equipment, especially during planting and harvesting seasons. He pointed out that these vehicles are a common sight in rural areas of the state and urged both drivers and farmers to take necessary precautions to prevent accidents. Drivers were advised to be patient, reduce speed, and avoid tailgating slow-moving agricultural vehicles, while farmers were reminded to inspect their equipment and ensure it is roadworthy before using it on public roads. Czajkowski also cautioned that with the upcoming fall harvest, there will be increased traffic of these vehicles on the road, potentially creating hazardous conditions. The incident is still being investigated, and a GoFundMe account has been set up for the Seaton family.
