California woman jailed for fatal 113 mph crash on 101 Freeway
A 24-year-old woman from Oxnard has been given a two-year state prison sentence for her involvement in a deadly crash in 2023. The incident occurred on August 13, 2023, when the woman, Ricki Newton, was reportedly driving over 110 mph on the 101 Freeway in Santa Barbara County. Newton was said to have been racing a friend on the southbound 101 near the Olive Mill Road exit in Montecito when she lost control while trying to pass another vehicle. This resulted in a collision that tragically caused the death of the passenger in the other vehicle, Louis Hernandez Jr., a 77-year-old man from Santa Paula. At the sentencing, Hernandez was remembered as a loving and hardworking individual who cared deeply for his family. District Attorney John Savrnoch emphasized the importance of understanding the severe and life-changing consequences that can result from reckless driving. Newton pleaded guilty to a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter, with her defense initially pushing for felony probation in a lengthy sentencing hearing.
