Boynton Beach man sentenced to 20 years in prison after fleeing fatal crash in 2024
A 28-year-old Boynton Beach man was sentenced to 20.65 years in state prison after fleeing a crash in Atlantis and near Palm Springs that killed a 69-year-old woman and involved four other vehicles in 2024. On Friday, Raekwon Johnson was sentenced by Circuit Judge Daliah Weiss, including mandating 10 years of probation after his release. On Jan. 29, Raekwon Johnson pleaded guilty to fleeing or attempting to elude causing death, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and three counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury. On Aug. 11, 2024, Johnson fled from Atlantis police in his 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan after police were conducting a traffic stop. Johnson drove southbound on Congress Avenue, passing through a red light near Palm Springs. While passing through the intersection, Johnson's car collided with a 2021 Ford Escape. The crash caused the Escape to spin out of control, rotating 90 degrees to face southbound and impact a Pilot Honda. Other cars involved in the crash were a 2008 Hyundai Sonata and a 2002 Chevy Avalanche. Also struck a 2011 Infiniti EX35 and a 2003 Honda Pilot, resulting in serious injuries for the driver of the Infiniti, a 40-year-old Bonyton Beach man.The driver of the Ford Escape, Sacha Rukin of Lake Worth Beach, was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Medical Center. Johnson suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Infiniti had serious injuries, and three other drivers were not injured.
