An incident on Interstate 5 early Friday morning left a box truck teetering above the San Joaquin River after a crash just south of Lathrop, according to the California Highway Patrol. Though the cause of the crash remains unclear, the truck's tractor smashed through the freeway guardrail, leaving the cab suspended over the river. First responders acted swiftly to stabilize the truck and perform a vertical rescue. Using a ladder truck, a firefighter descended onto the cab to secure a harness around the driver, who was then safely brought to solid ground. The driver emerged unscathed from the accident. A spill of diesel fuel into the river necessitated an environmental clean-up crew. Southbound lanes of I-5 were affected until almost noon due to the incident.
