Boston man killed in crash, driver arrested on OUI charges, Middlesex DA says
A woman was arrested and charged with operating under the influence after the Middlesex County district attorney's office said she hit and killed a man riding a moped in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The crash happened on March 21 just before 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar Street in Cambridge. According to the DA's office, the woman, Lauren Mullins, 32, of Roselle Park, New Jersey, was driving an SUV when she hit the victim riding the moped and then hit a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police cruiser. Both the police cruiser and moped were traveling in front of Mullins when her car allegedly hit both vehicles. The moped operator, Daniel O'Neil, 73, who was a Back Bay realtor, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died two days later. Mullins was arrested at the scene by a Cambridge police officer and charged with operating under the influence of liquor with serious bodily injury and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. "At this point, the Commonwealth is investigating this case no longer just as operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury, but now there has been a homicide, and the defendant is facing more serious charges out of superior court with much more serious penalties," prosecutor Kailey Verni said Thursday. A judge ordered Mullins to refrain from consuming alcohol and drugs, not to drive, and to stay in Massachusetts to submit random drug and alcohol tests. In January, prosecutors say Mullins was caught on a police body camera screaming at officers in Hoboken, New Jersey, before being arrested on a separate charge.O'Neil's family says they want Mullins held accountable."She doesn’t feel remorse. She’s not sorry. She’s only sorry because she has to pay for it," O'Neil's niece Meredith O'Neil said. Mullins is a Suffolk University Law School graduate and was awaiting her bar exam results at the time of the crash. On Thursday, Mullins' bail was raised to $65,000, and she was ordered held at MCI-Framingham. If convicted, Mullins could serve up to 20 years in prison.
