Bond set at $2.5M for Walkertown man charged in fatal crash on I-77 South: NCSHP
STATESVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol arrested and charged a man after two people were killed in a crash on 1-77 South Saturday night. At 10:10 p.m., the NCSHP responded to a fatal crash on I-77 South near mile marker 32. A 2006 Ford F-250 was traveling south on I-77 when it struck a southbound 2023 Kia Sportage, causing both vehicles to travel off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail. This caused the Kia to overturn. The driver of the Kia, Jessica Lyndsay Horton, 47, of Mooresville, and a passenger were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver of the Ford, Benjamin Wesley Overton, 31, of Walkertown, was not injured. The investigation revealed excessive speed and impairment as contributing factors to the crash, and Overton was charged with driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, two counts of felony death by vehicle, and driving while license revoked. He received a $2.5 million bond and is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are pending.
