
Big rig, school bus involved in separate crashes on Highway 17 in Santa Cruz Mountains
Separate crashes involving a school bus and a big rig caused injuries and lengthy traffic backups Monday morning on Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The California Highway Patrol said a semi-truck was traveling north on Highway 17 just after 11 a.m. when it overturned near Sugarloaf Road just south of Glenwood Cutoff. The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The right lane was closed but has since reopened.There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash.That crash followed one earlier in the morning about 1.5 miles away on Highway 17 involving a school bus traveling south. The CHP said 20 to 30 students were on board when their bus was rear-ended near Vine Hill Road.A 67-year-old San Jose woman was driving a Mini Cooper when her car hit the Blue Bird bus and then veered off the road and hit a tree, the CHP said. The woman was taken to Valley Medical Center with major injuries.There were two adults and 24 children on the bus. Two of the children suffered minor injuries, the CHP said. Two children on the bus had minor injuries after the crash, which was reported about 9:50 a.m.The cause of the crash is under investigation. It's not known if drugs or alcohol were a factor.Caltrans said all lanes were back open by 1 p.m.
