Biathlon gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier dies in mountain climbing accident
German biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier, who won two gold medals at the 2018 Olympics, tragically passed away in a mountaineering accident in a secluded region of Pakistan, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday. The 31-year-old Dahlmeier was climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range around noon local time on Monday when she was struck by falling rocks, according to reports from her team and Karrar Haidri, Vice President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. The incident occurred at an elevation of about 5,700 meters and her climbing partner immediately contacted emergency services. However, due to the remote location, a rescue helicopter was unable to reach the site until the following morning. Haidri expressed, “Laura passed away while engaged in her greatest passion - challenging herself in the high mountains.” He hailed her as a person with remarkable strength, determination, and enthusiasm that deeply impacted both the sports and mountaineering communities. Dahlmeier achieved Olympic success in PyeongChang 2018, securing gold in the 7.5-kilometer sprint and 10-kilometer pursuit, along with a bronze in the 15-kilometer event.
