Bald eagle in Missouri saved after car crash and lead poisoning

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. - An American bald eagle had its wing clipped by a passing driver in Pulaski County, Missouri, but has since been released back into the wild this week. The eagle, a young one, was hurt on Polla Road near Waynesville, Missouri, on Jul. 7. Local conservation officers promptly rescued the eagle, which was then taken to receive care by a veterinary team at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri. The vet team found out that the eagle's flight issue was not due to its wing injury, but rather a result of having high levels of lead in its bloodstream. This lead poisoning is often a consequence of consuming the flesh of animals or fish contaminated with lead shot or lures; the presence of lead can elevate in their system as a result.
