Balboa Avenue closed in Kearny Mesa after fatal motorcycle crash

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A stretch of Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa was temporarily closed Thursday morning following a deadly crash involving a motorcycle and a truck, authorities said. According to the San Diego Police Department, the 9400-9700 block of Balboa Avenue was shutdown between Interstate 15 and Ruffin Road while officers from the department's Traffic Division investigated the collision. During that time, drivers were urged to use alternative routes. The roadway has since reopened to motorists. Police the the crash happened around 6 a.m. when the driver of a white truck attempted to make a left turn downhill toward Viewridge Avenue while heading to work. At that same time, a motorcycle rider travelling along Balboa Avenue collided with the truck. The motorcycle came to rest further up the street. The motorcycle rider suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. In an update around 7:25 a.m., police confirmed that the rider, 67, died due to head trauma. Meanwhile, the driver of the white truck was not injured. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
