Aurora man convicted of shooting ex-partner following car accident, according to prosecutors

Travares O. Mitchell, 51, from Aurora has been found guilty of first-degree murder and armed habitual criminal charges by a Kane County jury. The conviction follows an incident on Jan. 13, 2024, when Mitchell shot and killed his former partner, Serhonda Burnett, 46, after crashing their car. Mitchell faces a potential sentence of 20 to 60 years in prison for first-degree murder, with an additional mandatory 25 years to life sentence for personally using the firearm that caused the death. In addition, he could face another six to 30 years for the armed habitual criminal charge. Mitchell is currently in custody at Kane County Jail awaiting his sentencing hearing on January 30, 2026.
