Attorney for DUI suspect in fatal case objects to delay in suppression hearing
In Youngstown, Ohio, a judge in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court has agreed to delay a suppression hearing for Walter Bolt, who is accused of causing a fatal accident while driving under the influence. The hearing, originally scheduled for June 17, has been rescheduled to June 23 based on a request from prosecutors. Walter Bolt, 65, of Struthers, had opposing motions filed by his attorney, Rhys Cartwright-Jones. Cartwright-Jones had filed a motion on June 3 to suppress blood evidence taken after the tragic crash on March 3 that resulted in the deaths of Angela Brown, 44, and her son, Jason Daff, 15. Another son of Brown's was injured and is currently recovering. Bolt pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on May 19, and upcoming court dates include a pretrial hearing on July 9 and a trial on July 14. The state requires additional time to gather medical records and is anticipating a new indictment from a grand jury. Despite Cartwright-Jones's opposition, the continuance was granted by Judge Krichbaum. Evidence shows Bolt's blood-alcohol content was well above the legal limit. There was also a request for a lower bond due to Bolt's deteriorating health condition, however, this was denied by Judge Krichbaum. Cartwright-Jones argued that the state lacks sufficient evidence to proceed with the case and that a continuance would not be beneficial.
