Asbury Park beach lifeguard injured by large umbrella in unusual wind incident
A lifeguard at the Jersey Shore was injured by a beach umbrella this week when strong wind gusts turned it into a dangerous projectile. The young woman was hit by a six-foot-long umbrella that went through her body, entering under her left shoulder and coming out through her back around 9:30 AM on Wednesday at Asbury Park’s 3rd Avenue Beach. Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy mentioned that the umbrella had protruded about a foot while providing aid. Emergency responders, including other lifeguards and EMS personnel, quickly assisted her by cutting off the stake of the umbrella to safely transport her to Jersey Shore University Medical Centre in Neptune. The victim remained conscious and upbeat throughout the ordeal, according to Keddy. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, with a theory that the woman may have been trying to secure a loose umbrella when the incident occurred. This incident highlights the frequent occurrence of beach umbrellas becoming airborne hazards, with reports indicating thousands of injuries each year in the US.
