Architect Kongjian Yu, known for 'sponge city' designs, dies in Brazil plane crash.

Renowned Chinese landscape architect Kongjian Yu tragically passed away in a plane crash in Brazil, along with three others. The incident occurred while the aircraft was trying to land on a large farm near Aquidauana in Mato Grosso do Sul state. The cause of the crash is not yet known. Yu was globally admired for his innovative "sponge cities" concept, which involves using nature-based solutions to manage water, rather than relying solely on concrete infrastructure. This approach, aimed at addressing the effects of climate change, advocates for creating large water retention areas within urban centers. Yu's idea has been embraced in numerous locations worldwide, from China to the United States and Russia. The landscape architect was also the founder of the College of Architecture and Landscape at Peking University. Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin acknowledged Yu's contributions to sustainable urbanism and environmental conservation. The tragic accident occurred during a documentary project focusing on the Pantanal wetlands, a biodiverse region in Brazil popular among tourists. Yu, along with the filmmakers, was dedicated to showcasing this unique ecosystem to a wider audience.
