Arbitrator rules for Kansas City firefighter following fatal crash
An arbitrator has issued a ruling that a Kansas City firefighter involved in a fatal crash nearly four years ago must be brought back to his position with retroactive pay. Dominic Biscari, who was 21 at the time of the incident in December 2021, was driving a pumper truck in Westport with lights and siren on when he failed to stop at a red light, colliding with a vehicle and causing fatalities. Biscari later entered an Alford plea to three counts of involuntary manslaughter but received a suspended sentence. The firefighter's union pointed out that the city did not follow proper procedures in disciplining and terminating Biscari, as outlined in the union contract. The city publicly announced its intention to dismiss Biscari, but this decision was made without adhering to required steps. Biscari has not yet returned to work pending potential legal actions. The city has indicated that it will challenge the arbitrator’s decision through legal means after rejecting a proposed settlement.
