Alaska lawmaker's husband dies in plane crash due to overloaded moose meat - NTSB
A recent report from federal investigators revealed that a tragic plane crash two years ago, which took the life of Eugene “Buzzy” Peltola Jr., the husband of then-U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, was due to the plane being overloaded with moose meat and antlers. Eugene Peltola was piloting the Piper PA 18-150 Super Cub when it went down in a mountainous area in Alaska, while transporting parts of a moose that a group of hunters had killed. The NTSB's final report indicated that the plane was 117 pounds over its maximum takeoff weight, with various moose parts and antlers adding to the excess weight. The investigation suggested that this, combined with the added drag and imbalance caused by the antlers on the wing, likely contributed to the crash due to insufficient power and control authority to maneuver safely above the terrain. The crash was heard by a nearby hunter, Travis Hopkins, who quickly sought help and the Alaska Air National Guard was able to eventually locate the wreckage. Despite efforts to transport Eugene Peltola to a hospital, he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Mary Peltola had previously gained national recognition as the first Alaska Native to win a congressional seat in 2022.
