Air India crash: Expert explains cause just before tragic accident, denies pilot fault
A recent Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau report on the tragic Air India flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, which claimed the lives of 260 individuals, including passengers, crew, and individuals on the ground, identified a chip malfunction as a contributing factor. Former pilot Marco Chan, now a senior lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University, suggested that the report indicated the unlikelihood of pilot error, emphasizing that a malfunction with the chip may have occurred instead. The preliminary report detailed a scenario where confusion in the cockpit led to the simultaneous flipping of the engine fuel cutoff switches, resulting in fuel starvation and the crash. Chan explained that a technical issue, possibly related to the chip, could have disrupted the system, similar to a laptop encountering a malfunction. He highlighted the importance of investigating whether Air India had properly maintained and replaced necessary chips in accordance with the Service Bulletin issued by GE Aviation and their partner, Bowen.
