A Moroccan was one of the 17 victims in Lisbon Funicular Crash.
In Mohammedia, around 6:05 p.m. local time during rush hour, one of the yellow-and-white cars of the Ascensor da Glória derailed on a steep incline near Restauradores Square. Witnesses reported a loud noise before the tram careened down the hill and collided with a building, resulting in extensive damage, numerous injuries, and the tram being completely wrecked. Operating since 1885, the Ascensor da Glória is a historic funicular railway connecting lower Lisbon to the Bairro Alto district. Known for its unique counterbalanced mechanism with two trams linked by a cable, the railway spans about 275 meters and is popular among both locals and tourists. This tragic incident has led to 17 confirmed fatalities and 21 injuries, with five in critical condition, including individuals from various countries. Emergency services quickly responded, with over 60 personnel and 22 vehicles deployed for rescue efforts amid challenges posed by the damage to the tram and its surroundings. A national day of mourning has been declared, with European Union flags at half-staff and public memorials honoring the victims. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the derailment's cause, with initial observations pointing to a possible cable failure. Carris, the tram's operating company, affirmed regular maintenance, though concerns have been raised about the maintenance procedures and equipment conditions. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas conveyed condolences and committed to a comprehensive investigation.
