85% of ATV and UTV crash victims in Wisconsin did not wear helmets

According to the latest reports from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), there have been 25 fatal crashes involving ATVs and UTVs so far this year. State officials are concerned about the high number of fatalities, with the primary contributing factors being the lack of helmet use and seat belt usage. Five of the fatalities were individuals under 18, who are required to wear helmets when riding in public spaces. Only one of these victims was found to be wearing a helmet. In comparison, there were 40 fatalities in 2024, with alcohol, speeding, and reckless operation being major factors, along with low helmet usage. Lt. Jacob Holscalw, Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator, highlighted the importance of safe riding practices such as wearing helmets and seat belts to prevent crashes. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also reported 28 fatal crashes as of November 5, 2024, with many of the victims not wearing helmets. FOX 9 contacted Minnesota DNR officials for the latest data on fatal ATV and UTV crashes in 2025, but the information was not provided in time for this report.
