8-year-old boy and mother seriously hurt in Brooklyn school bus accident

A school bus crashed into a fence in Brooklyn this Wednesday morning, resulting in serious injuries to an 8-year-old boy and his 43-year-old mother. They were promptly taken to Maimonides Medical Center for treatment, where they are expected to recover. The incident occurred near the Cortelyou Early Childhood Center, at Bedford Avenue and Farragut Road in Ditmas Park. Fortunately, no students were on board at the time, and the elderly driver remained at the scene. Councilmember Farrah Louis noted that the accident likely occurred when the driver mistakenly pressed the gas instead of the brakes while trying to avoid another vehicle. The bus was seen partially on the sidewalk after crashing through an iron fence and cinderblock wall. A witness mentioned seeing the bus waiting to turn down Bedford Avenue before the collision. The young boy, a third-grader at the school, sustained a broken arm, while his mother suffered head and neck injuries. Both were conscious following the crash.
