48 fatalities in Russian plane crash

A Russian Antonov An-24 passenger plane with 48 people on board crashed in Russia's far east, resulting in the tragic death of all passengers and crew members. The aircraft, nearly 50 years old and from the Soviet era, was operated by a Siberian-based airline named Angara on a flight from Blagoveshchensk to Tynda. The crash site, located in a dense forest area, was identified by a helicopter, and rescue efforts were underway. Officials announced three days of mourning, and a government commission was formed to investigate the incident. The Kremlin confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was briefed about the crash. The aircraft was one of several Antonovs operated by Angara, which requested an extension of service life due to challenges in replacing the aging fleet caused by sanctions and limited access to parts. Despite being highly reliable in Siberia's harsh conditions, maintaining these aircraft has become costly, and efforts are being made to keep them operational until newer models are available in the mid-2020s.
