4 students hurt in small bus crash in Portland Township

PORTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Four high school students were hospitalized after a small bus heading to Ohio for a college visit crashed in Portland Township. Just before 7 a.m., troopers with the Michigan State Police were sent to eastbound I-96 near Kent Street for a crash. Responding troopers learned that a small bus had veered off from the road and hit a guardrail. Eleven high school students, four adults and the driver were on board. Four students were taken to the hospital. MSP said three of them had minor injuries and one had serious injuries. The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre confirmed with News 8 that the students and adults were from one of its programs and released the following statement: Traffic was being rerouted off the freeway while crews investigated and cleared the scene. The lanes have since been reopened. The crash remains under investigation.
