4 injured in I-95 crash that sparked Portsmouth brush fire
A crash on Interstate 95 in Portsmouth sparked a brush fire Tuesday afternoon and left four people injured.Portsmouth Fire Chief William McQuillen said a car hit the median off of Exit 3 on I-95 south at about 1:45 p.m.McQuillen said the crash sparked flames that climbed up a hill along the side of the highway and spread into a neighborhood. No one in the neighborhood was injured and no homes were damaged as a result of the fire.Four people who were inside the car were taken to an area hospital to be treated for moderate injuries, according to McQuillen.McQuillen said dry leaves in the wooded area alongside I-95 contributed to the fire spreading quickly."We're still dry. We're still in a drought condition and the rains that we've gotten haven't alleviated that yet," he said. "That coupled with the wind and the fact that we don't have an awful lot of leaves out on the trees has made the brush fire conditions a little bit more serious." New Hampshire State Police officials said the two right lanes on I-95 south were closed at Mile Marker 13.2 as a result of the crash, and warned drivers to anticipate delays.Traffic was moving smoothly in the area by early Tuesday evening.
