3-year-old hit, killed in parking lot collision
SOUTH KOHALA, Hawai‘i Island (KHON2) -- The Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a single-vehicle collision inside a residential complex parking lot in South Kohala that claimed the life of a three-year-old girl. On Friday, Feb. 20, around 7:12 p.m., HPD responded to a collision inside a residential complex off Waikoloa Road. Officers found that a 26-year-old woman was reversing in the parking lot when a toddler ran behind the car. The driver hit the toddler, who sustained critical injuries and was taken to Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, HPD said. Police do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs are contributing factors in this collision. The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has launched an investigation into the incident. Since the incident was inside a parking lot, this fatality does not affect the year-to-date fatality count. HPD asks that anyone with information contact Officer Adam Roberg at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229, or via email [email protected]. Anonymous tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
