3 killed when tree fell on car during storm were children, deputies say

CLIMAX TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The three family members killed when a tree fell on their car during Sunday's storms were children ranging in age from 2 to 11, deputies say. The dead include a 2-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother. The third person killed is their cousin, an 11-year-girl. All three were from Calhoun County, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said Monday, though it did not specify where. Their names were not released Monday. It happened around 5:40 p.m. Sunday on E. S Avenue just west of S. 47th Street in Climax Township. The sheriff’s office says its initial investigation found a tree hit a car. "(A)t this time it appears weather is the main contributing factor to this accident," the sheriff's office said in a Monday release, though it noted the investigation was ongoing. Three more members of the same family were hospitalized. On Sunday, one was in critical condition and two others in stable condition. "The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our most sincere condolences to the family, loved ones and friends of the victims in this tragic incident. And to all those affected directly or indirectly during this tragic loss for our community," the release said.
