DENVER (KDVR) — A crash on Interstate 70 on Tuesday morning near New Castle claimed the lives of three people, officials reported. The Garfield County Coroner's Office was dispatched to the crash scene at about 10:30 a.m. The crash involved two vehicles in the westbound lanes of I-70 and closed the interstate until about 3:50 p.m., according to the Garfield County Emergency Communications Authority. Investigators have identified the three people killed and have worked to recover their bodies from the vehicles. Autopsies are scheduled for Wednesday. The identities of the three victims are currently being withheld while the coroner's office notifies their next of kin, but some information was provided about them. The coroner's office said that one vehicle contained an 84-year-old woman from New Castle, while the other vehicle had a 79-year-old female passenger and an 81-year-old male driver, both of Highland, Utah. Preliminary information shows the cause of death as blunt force injuries and the manner is being investigated as an accident. The Colorado State Patrol is the lead investigating agency in the crash.
