3 dead in Easter Day crash after suspects flee traffic stop: NCSHP
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has released new details about a deadly crash in Durham County late Sunday afternoon that resulted from suspects fleeing a traffic stop. According to the Durham County Sheriff's Office, deputies received a call on Easter just before 6:30 p.m. about the occupants of two vehicles -- a white Audi and a black Infiniti -- firing shots in the area of the 8200 block of Ball Road. Deputies said they located vehicles matching the suspects' description in the parking lot of a convenience store on Roxboro Street. When a deputy entered the parking lot, the vehicles fled. The deputy attempted a traffic stop on one of the suspect vehicles, a 2003 Infiniti, but lost sight of it. About seven minutes later, the Infiniti was traveling south on U.S. 501 when it crossed the center line and crashed head-on with a northbound Honda CR-V driven by Sandra Marie Moore of Bahama near Roxboro Street and Latta Road. It then struck a Lincoln Navigator traveling north, according to the NCSHP. Troopers said the two occupants of the suspect vehicle, a driver who has not been identified as of Monday morning and passenger Mercedes Toledo-Goss, were ejected. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Moore was also pronounced dead at the scene, according to the NCSHP. Radio dispatch audio indicates a group of teenagers were firing gunshots into the air on Ball Road, before attempting to escape law enforcement at over 120 mph. Several people near the scene of the crash said they were extremely upset, shocked and disgusted with what took place on Sunday night. Some were seen praying next to a small memorial with flowers on the side of North Roxboro Street. "I saw the car start coming and then just the explosion," crash witness Taylor Wells said. "Certainly surreal. I pulled over and then was just kind of immediately like 'I need to get out of here' because it was a tremendous noise, and then kind of putting together what was going on." CBS 17 spoke briefly with a family member of Moore's who said he wants to know the identity of the other suspects linked to the gunfire call who are still on the loose. According to the NCSHP, the occupants of the Lincoln Navigator were transported to Duke Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The second suspect vehicle, which deputies said was a white Audi, has not been located as of Monday. The incident remains under investigation. The driver of the suspect vehicle in the crash will be identified when the next of kin is notified.
