22 athletes returning from a sports festival die in road accident in northern Nigeria

In tragic news from Nigeria, a bus carrying athletes returning from a sports festival veered off a bridge in Kano, resulting in the death of at least 22 individuals and injuries to several others. The accident that occurred on Saturday during the athletes' journey back from the Nigerian National Sports Festival in Ogun state was attributed to the driver seemingly losing control. The survivors of the crash were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Among those on the bus were athletes, coaches, and officials representing Kano at the sports festival. As a mark of respect, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared Monday as a day of mourning in Kano. The families of the victims will receive financial assistance of 1 million naira (approximately $630) and food supplies, according to Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing challenges of road safety in Nigeria, where accidents are sadly common due to poor road conditions and insufficient traffic regulations.
