21-year-old killed in fatal Pompey crash at intersection; neighbors call for additional stop signs for safety
POMPEY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- New York State Police have released the name of the man killed in a Saturday crash in Pompey. 21-year-old Jacob Korkue was killed after he failed to stop at a stop sign on Broadfield Road and was hit by another vehicle traveling down Sweet Road. Russ Kopylczak has lived on Sweet Road since October 2024 and was home at the time of Saturday's crash. "We heard a bang. It was almost like a very large boulder falling into a dump truck. It was a very large bang," he said. "I didn't come out to see because there are quarries around. I wasn't sure what it was, but it didn't seem normal." The 71-year-old man who hit Korkue was coming down a hill on Sweet Road. "There's a knoll right after that, and I can see where someone coming from a high speed, it would be very difficult for the person pulling out to stop in time," Kopylczak said. Remnants of the crash still remain at the scene two days later including tire tracks, pieces from the vehicles, and a bent street sign. "There were a lot of police vehicles up here, and there was a lot of activity going on," Kopylczak said. "You could perceive there was a fatality." After speaking with Russ and a few other neighbors who did not want to be on camera, they all agree that two more stop signs should be installed at the intersection. "It would be a good idea to consider a four-way stop for the intersection there, so people have time to slow down, look both ways, and then proceed," Kopylczak said. And he has a message for drivers. "Anyone in this area, whether you're from the area or traveling through, it's important to be safe. And at that four-way intersection, it will go a long way," Kopylczak said. The 71-year-old man and a passenger in each vehicle were taken to Upstate Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. State police say their investigation is ongoing.
