The incident occurred when a speeding Dodge pickup truck crossed the center line on NC-62, veered off the road, and collided with a pole shed, resulting in multiple rollovers of the vehicle. Several individuals were thrown from the truck during the accident. While the driver survived, the identities of those involved have not been disclosed while their families are being informed. Witness Mistie Nelson came across the overturned truck and immediately stopped to help, later returning to the scene to offer prayers for all affected by the tragedy.
