2 fatalities in accident that closed I-96 in Ionia County for hours
The Ionia County Sheriff's Office reported a tragic accident on I-96 that resulted in the deaths of two individuals, leading to the closure of the westbound lanes near Sunfield Highway in Orange Township for several hours. The incident involved a semi-truck, a box truck, and a pickup truck, with the crash occurring around 3:15 pm. The investigation revealed that the semi-truck was stationary in traffic on I-96, causing a pickup truck to slow down or stop behind it. Unfortunately, a box truck was unable to stop in time and collided with the pickup truck, resulting in both vehicles catching fire. Tragically, the drivers of the burning trucks were unable to escape and passed away at the scene. The Sheriff's Office mentioned that the only injury-free individual was the semi-truck driver at the front. The highway reopened at 10:20 p.m., with images depicting the intense fire and firefighters working to extinguish it. The Sheriff's Office attributed the crash to heavy traffic congestion approaching a construction zone and drivers failing to maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
