2 fatalities in accident, Larimer County road closed: CSP
Two individuals tragically lost their lives in a fatal collision on U.S. 287 in Larimer County on Friday evening, which led to the closure of the highway, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The CSP responded to the incident, involving a 2018 Honda Accord and a 1987 Chevrolet Suburban, around 6:18 p.m. Prior to the crash, an observer had dialed 911 to report the Honda as a possible drunk driver, approximately three minutes beforehand. The location of the collision was U.S. 287 at Red Mountain Road, situated about 11 miles from the Wyoming state border and 18 miles north of Laporte. The CSP explained that the Chevrolet was headed south on U.S. 287 at milepost 372 when the Honda veered from the northbound lane into the southbound lane. Despite efforts from the Chevrolet's driver to avoid impact by hitting a guardrail, a direct collision occurred with the Honda, resulting in both vehicles catching fire and trapping the drivers inside. The Larimer County Coroner's Office will disclose the identities of the deceased once their next of kin have been notified. Following the crash, CSP shut down the highway in both directions at 6:36 p.m., urging motorists to take alternative routes and anticipate delays in the vicinity. The investigation remains ongoing under the supervision of CSP's vehicular crimes unit, with no specified timeframe for the roadway reopening at 7:40 p.m. This part of the region has witnessed tragedy before, notably in February 2024 when three University of Wyoming swimmers lost their lives in a solo vehicle accident.
