2 fatalities, 26 injuries in consecutive interstate crashes in South Carolina
More than 25 individuals were injured and two individuals lost their lives in accidents on I-95 in South Carolina. The incidents occurred during a heavy thunderstorm near the 40-mile marker on I-95SB, involving two separate crashes with a total of 14 vehicles, including six tractor-trailers. First responders reported that 26 people were injured, four were trapped, and two fatalities occurred at the scene. Due to the wreckage, the southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for 11 hours. The accidents took place near the Combahee River bridge, an area with limited visibility worsened by the storm. Following the incidents, emergency crews faced challenges such as broken glass from a spilled semi-truck cargo and vehicles stacked on top of each other. The response efforts involved multiple ambulance units from Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties, while medical helicopters were unable to operate due to adverse weather conditions. The highway reopened at 3 a.m. the next day, and investigations into the crashes are currently being conducted by South Carolina authorities.
