2 dead, more hurt in wrong-way crash on Interstate 85 in North Carolina

CONCORD, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An early morning crash has taken two lives on Interstate 85 near the Concord airport, according to the Mecklenburg EMS Agency (Medic). The fatal incident happened just after 5 a.m. on Friday, March 6, on Interstate 85 South near mile marker 49. This is between Interstate 485 and Poplar Tent Road. North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Whit Efrid says a blue 2017 Ford Focus driven by 25-year-old Ryan Stamper drove onto the interstate the wrong way, coming from Exit 49 for Brunton Smith Boulevard. The Ford hit a red 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 54-year-old Robert Muellemann head-on in the leftmost lane. Both drivers died at the scene. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine if impairment was a factor in the crash. Trooper Efrid says there were three other secondary crashes following the initial incident. Cabarrus EMS took two other people to the hospital with minor injuries. All southbound lanes were closed for several hours at Exit 52 for Poplar Tent Road.
