2 adults die, 1 minor saved in car crash off Million Dollar Highway
Two adults tragically lost their lives and a young passenger was rescued after their car veered off the road and rolled 320 feet down a mountain along the Million Dollar Highway south of Ouray, Colorado. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, prompting a response from the Colorado State Patrol (CSP). The CSP reported that a silver Honda Civic crashed upside down in Red Mountain Creek near milepost 88, about five miles south of Ouray. The juvenile female passenger was rescued and taken to a local hospital, while the highway was closed in both directions for the ongoing recovery efforts. The challenging terrain has made the recovery operation difficult and time-consuming, potentially lasting several hours. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes. Witnesses to the crash are urged to contact CSP Dispatch. The Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton, part of US 550, is known for its dangerous conditions, characterized by sharp curves, lack of guardrails, and narrow sections, some as narrow as 23 feet. The highway has a speed limit of 25 mph, with drivers encouraged to drive even slower in icy winter conditions. Further updates on this incident and information on past crashes in this area will be provided as available.
