18-year-old charged after head-on crash involving school bus

Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against a young Massachusetts driver who admitted to being on their cellphone before a head-on crash involving a school bus, police said.According to the Lunenburg Police Department, officers and the town's fire department were called to the scene of a crash involving the bus and a sedan in the area of 1300 Lancaster Ave. Approximately 20 people were aboard the bus, police said. No injuries were reported, and police said a second bus was brought in to take the children to school. Police said the 18-year-old who drove the sedan admitted to using their phone, causing them to drift into the oncoming lane. The driver's name was not immediately released. Photos provided by police show that both vehicles suffered front-end damage. Airbags deployed in the sedan and debris was scattered on the road."Speed did not appear to be a factor in this case. The driver's operation was determined to be negligent and they were criminally charged," police wrote in a statement. Additionally, officers wanted to share a reminder that all motorists should pay full attention to the task of driving."Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed," police wrote.
