1 killed in multi-vehicle Long Beach crash
One person was killed after a multi-vehicle crash in Long Beach Friday night. The deadly crash happened near 12th Street and Long Beach Boulevard, close to the city’s downtown area, around 11:53 p.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department. Investigators said a female driver of an Infiniti sedan was speeding southbound on Long Beach Boulevard with no headlights on. As she continued down the road, a male driver in a Honda Civic made a right turn onto Long Beach Boulevard from a side street and spotted the speeding Infiniti. He quickly swerved to avoid being rear-ended but crashed into a nearby guardrail, police said. The female driver also swerved to avoid the Honda, but lost control and crashed into a nearby Metro train. Footage from the scene showed that the impact pushed the woman’s car through a chain-link fence and onto a vacant lot across from the Metro tracks. Fire crews were seen extracting the woman from the vehicle, which appeared to be totaled from the collision. She was transported to the hospital where she later died from her injuries. Police have only identified her as a 21-year-old Compton resident. The Honda driver, a 29-year-old Long Beach man, was not seriously injured and is cooperating with the investigation. Police said speed and impaired driving are being investigated as potential factors in the female driver’s case. No further details were released as the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Ashley Van Holland at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips can be provided to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at lacrimestoppers.org.
