WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A 69-year-old man from Goddard was killed Friday morning in a crash on I-135 after stopping his vehicle to retrieve lost cargo. It happened around 8:20 a.m. between Kellogg and Harry, just north of Lincoln. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the man was driving a 2020 Chevy Silverado in the inside lane when he lost cargo on the roadway. Troopers say he stopped in the lane, exited the vehicle, and attempted to retrieve the item when a second vehicle struck the rear driver's side of his truck. The man, identified as Joel J. Troyer, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed he was outside of his vehicle at the time of the collision. The second vehicle, a 2024 Kia Seltos, was driven by a 34-year-old Wichita man. He and an 8-month-old infant passenger were uninjured. The crash is under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol. No charges have been filed at this time.
