1 fatality in car-train collision near downtown Auburn
A tragic incident occurred early Thursday morning in downtown Auburn when a vehicle collided with a train near the railroad crossing at North Gay Street and Mitcham Avenue. The collision resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man from Birmingham, identified as Christian Smaw. He was the sole occupant of the car, a 2017 Dodge Charger, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the accident, authorities have cleared the train and reopened most downtown crossings, except for North Gay Street which remains closed pending further investigation.
