1 fatality, 1 injured in elk-car crash

A tragic incident occurred in Lincoln County on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to a man after their car collided with an elk. The accident took place around 7 a.m. along US Highway 2, near mile marker 74, approximately 30 miles southeast of Libby. The unfortunate event involved a 68-year-old male driver and a 70-year-old female passenger from Libby, traveling eastbound in a Toyota Camry. According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the driver reported an elk crossing their path, prompting an evasive maneuver that led to the vehicle sliding off the road, crashing into an embankment, and overturning. Tragically, the female passenger, who has not been identified yet, was ejected from the car upon impact and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The driver was hospitalized for his undisclosed injuries. It was noted by the MHP that neither individual was wearing a seatbelt at the time. The report confirmed that alcohol or speed were not contributing factors to the collision but mentioned that the wet road conditions may have played a role.
