Young college student paralyzed after swimming incident in California
A 19-year-old San Diego State University student is facing a life-changing journey to recovery after a swimming incident at Pacific Beach left him paralyzed from the chest down. Ethan McCoy, a promising physical therapy student preparing for an Ironman competition, was swimming at Crystal Pier with friends when a wave incident occurred on August 30. Despite being close to shore, Ethan was swept by a strong wave, leading to a severe spinal cord injury. His friends quickly acted, pulling him out of the water for assistance. Ethan underwent surgery for three severely fractured neck vertebrae. While his father, Jim McCoy, described the emotional rollercoaster their family has experienced over the past few weeks, Ethan's unwavering determination is evident in his commitment to rehabilitation. Although doctors predict Ethan may never walk again, his spirit remains unbroken as he sets his sights on defying these prognoses. He has been transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility in Chicago, with a GoFundMe campaign established to support his family with the increasing medical costs.
