Video: Police detain suspect in deadly crash that resulted in death of University of New Mexico Hospital nurse
In a tragic incident at the University of New Mexico Hospital, a nurse named Alec Montoya lost his life after being struck by a speeding driver while crossing the street. Newly released police body camera footage sheds light on the events of that night, revealing details of the case. The driver, Brian Boyce, initially stopped at the scene after the collision but later fled the hospital where he was being treated for minor injuries. He was eventually apprehended by law enforcement at his home. Boyce was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, although his defense has contested this charge, asserting that he left the hospital, not the crash site. Following a ruling of lack of evidence, Boyce was released from custody in October. The community is mourning the loss of Alec Montoya, a pediatric E.R. nurse at UNMH since 2020, who had graduated from UNM’s College of Nursing in 2023. The investigation into this heartbreaking incident continues, with questions remaining about potential additional charges from the Bernalillo County District Attorney.
