UPS and Fedex ground MD-11s, the aircraft involved in Louisville accident
Two major parcel carriers in the country have decided to temporarily halt the operations of their McDonnell Douglas MD-11s, the type of aircraft involved in the recent UPS plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky that claimed at least 14 lives. The Federal Aviation Administration has also mandated inspections for all such planes after the tragic event. UPS made the decision to ground their MD-11 fleet, which constitutes 9% of their air fleet, in the interest of safety. They emphasized that the safety of their employees and the communities they serve is paramount. Following the recommendation of the aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, UPS took proactive steps to ground their MD-11s. FedEx, a UPS competitor, has also grounded their MD-11s as a precautionary measure. The UPS incident occurred during takeoff when the left engine detached, causing fatalities and injuries on the ground. Both UPS and FedEx have stated that they are putting contingency plans in place to minimize service disruptions despite the temporary grounding of the affected aircraft.
