Trial starts for man charged with drunk driving in crash that caused death of Air National Guard leader

A trial has officially begun for a driver who has been accused of striking and causing the death of the leader of New Hampshire's Air National Guard. Opening statements made on Monday detailed the prosecution's claim that Paul Clement intentionally fled the scene of the accident in Rochester due to intoxicated driving, while the defense countered by stating that he was experiencing a severe medical issue. The incident, which occurred in July 2024, involved Clement allegedly hitting John Pogorek, 57, after a day of drinking at a local bar. Prosecutors highlighted that Clement's blood alcohol level was well above the legal limit when tested. In response, the defense team argued that the crash was a result of a chronic medical condition, rather than solely alcohol consumption. The trial is expected to continue for five days.
